May 1, 2011

Later than planned but still much too early in the morning, Joanna and I started out on the road headed west toward an unknown destination for her birthday. It was a long drive and it started to rain when we got closer

Even after driving through the entrance and seeing the name of the place we had arrived at, Joanna didn't know where we were until we got to this view on the nature trail. We were at Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece Fallingwater, a house built directly into the landscape of Pennsylvania.

We took a tour of the grounds and the interior of the house (where photography is prohibited, unless of course you pay an extra hundred dollars for the "in-depth" tour.. pfft). The house is really amazing. Wright used rock taken from the mountain on which he was building. The interior is no less awesome than outside. Everything was considered.

This is one of my favorite spots in the house, where the canopy hangs above an outdoor walkway so we can stay dry while being outside in rain. The idea is for there to be a harmony between inside and out, so you are never confined by the walls.

A lot of the overhanging parts of the house are held up by the counterweight of the rest of the house. It's pretty amazing. The house is also cooled by the stream that runs underneath it, with no air conditioning.

After the tour we wandered the grounds a bit and took some photos, then came to the much more picturesque overlook to stand in awe of the architectural marvel.

I could have stood there for hours looking at the house and listening to gentle washing of the water over the rocks.

We headed out after a while, as it continued to rain steadily, and went up steep graded roads and were were warned of a dangerous mountain.

We came to the Summit Inn, where we went to the room and checked out the really nice view out our window. While it was covered in fog at first, it cleared up after some time. I took some photos after removing the screen from the window to get a better shot.. oops.

We found an Italian place to eat dinner that was basically Olive Garden. That's not a bad thing. The food was really good and they brought a cheesecake slice for dessert in celebration of the birthday. That was also good.

After waiting the suggested thirty minutes on the drive back to the inn, we got in the pool for a little while. No one else was there and the water was warm, but not uncomfortably so. After some laps and getting water in my ear, we left the pool, shivering our way back up to the room.

We borrowed some games from the lobby and, while listening to news of bin Laden's death, we played Boggle, UpWords and this awkward upright version of Scrabble. It was somewhat enjoyable, but I can see why it never took off. It's a bit confusing.

Swimming always makes me tired, but after not sleeping enough last night and having such a long day, I was ready to pass out after games.
