May 22, 2010

I went for a run in the morning by the water. It was a longer loop than I expected going over the bridge and past the park. It felt good to get out and run again besides the heat. There were a lot of people out running in the same area.

We checked out of our hotel and caught the bus for a long ride to the easternmost point of the island so we could do a hike that we read about.

It started up steep volcanic rock and we could see the lighthouse we were heading toward popping up around the corner. It was a hot, steep climb but it leveled off when we got near the middle and we took a path around the side.

This path offered some nice views but it quickly became extremely narrow and dangerous. We determined that it would be best to find another way around and headed back.

We took the high route and got a view in the other direction from the top. It was a good place to sit and rest for a short time before we continued around.

We could see down to the lighthouse from the top as well. There was a paved path that led up to it from the other side. We could have taken that but where's the fun?

We climbed around to the other side, taking part of the paved path, and stopped when we got this close since we were already in an area that was marked with no trespassing signs. I like this view of it. We headed down the long, winding paved path after that and then down the long, hot road to the bus stop.

Two buses passed us on the walk to the bus stop and then we waited for close to a half hour for our bus to pick us up. I was starving once we got back to town so we headed right for Puka Dog!

It's a hot dog in a bun with a hole in it (veggie of course). I got the hottest sauce, which wasn't that hot, with coconut relish and guava mustard. It was so good.. I want to open a Hawai'ian food place in New Jersey.

We gathered our things and caught the bus again. I feel bad for people that need to do that often because it takes forever. We got to the pier just in time to register and catch our boat.

After a thorough screening we finally got on the boat and tried to find our way around.

We found the room, which was pretty small, and I got a shower while waiting for our luggage to arrive.

We got some food from the buffet and sat on the back of the boat as we departed Honolulu Harbor. There were a lot of older people on the boat but I guess that is to be expected. The sunset was nice and the food was good.

It was another early night for me after being out in the sun all day and then getting rocked to sleep by our boat.

Total distance: 103 nautical miles. This is what our boat looks like. It has a tiny sail and all. We traveled overnight to Maui.
